How rock music is to save books (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - statement of Keith Richards, that he really Snort ashes of his father to the revelation of Sammy Hagar that he is abducted by aliens, out there autobiographies by aging rock stars help fuel business ill Edition.

"There is clearly a demand," explains Mauro DiPreta, vp of it books, which publishes the current New York Times bestseller of Hagar "" Red: my life uncensored in Rock. "" The former leader of the Group Van Halen was paid approximately $ 3 million (cashed Richards a reported $ 7 million for his memoirs "The life").

"What you have with a book is a remembrance," adds DiPreta. "You can buy a CD, but you've probably heard the songs several times already." You can bid on an Eric Clapton guitar used. "But for $25, you get to hear all the stories, not only behind the songs, but how were these guys."

Says literary agent Sarah Lazin, who specializes in the titles of music on the theme: "publishers seek an automatic basis fan so that they can simply plug into it." Right now, I have four deals with a major agency where they have the star and I am the writer. It is unprecedented. ?

The boom is good news for fingerprints as ' HarperCollins, she, who has also published autobiographies by singer drawee Guns did Roses drummer and Celebrity Rehab graduate Steven Adler, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine and runaways Cherie Currie. Ghost writers are in high demand and can obtain 25 000 $-200 000 $ for their services. most is the average of 75 000 $-$ 100, 000.

Rock memoirs are a ray of light for booksellers faced with the dual challenge of the recession and the transition to e-books. Although sales increased 3.6% in 2010, publishers struggled to find nonfiction hits. Documentary titles with sales of 100,000 or more decreased by 20% a 132 2008 Summit. The list of 2010 is paperwork with politicians and political commentators (w. George Bush, Glenn Beck) and actors (Jon Stewart, Chelsea Handler). The exception is "Life Richards" ranked No. 4.

But some publishing observers are concerned about overkill. "When you have the drummer who has played on two Guns 'n' Roses albums put out a book that does a that evil, which perhaps says this glut is burn the market," said Neil Strauss, co-author of the gold standard in autobiographies rockMotley flood tome "the dirt" 2001 and head of the footprint of the HarperCollins Igniter. His latest book, "everybody loves you when you're Dead," a compilation of a career of musician interviews, was published in March.

But DiPreta disagrees. "I do not think that it is a case of," I read life of Keith Richards, so I will not read the book of Steven Tyler when it comes out in a few months. ". These stories are unique. they feed on passion of the people you are talking about their memories, the fabric of your adolescence and coming of age. This is what we are trying to capture.

Some artists simply don't buy in lore memoir, however. Billy Joel said on March 31 that he was returning of his advance from HarperCollins $ 3 million. "It took work on a book make me realize that I am not all that interested in talking about the past", he said. A source said that the manuscript of Joel, scheduled for publication in June, through the editing process, and well into production.

Me Lazin, explains an option is rarely cancelled. Instead, the publishers hope that their star will change his mind. "I heard that Patti Smith was under contract for 10 years, until it 'Just Kids'", she said. It became a bestseller, moving of 158 000 copies.

That is so buy these volumes? "Baby boomers are buyers still great book, and they have a large part of the audience," Lazin, said.

To also attend book signatures by people such as Mustaine and Hagar, DiPreta notes that crowds are composed of most of the men and people for whom "bookstore is a destination", but he marvels the "intergenerational appeal". "You will find parents with their children of age high school or College, such as when you go to a concert." Type of wanting to share this experience. "(It is interesting to note, however, that the"S - my Dad Says book - based on a Twitter stream - sold approximately as many units as tome Richards, but seven times the number of electronic books.")

Similarly, motivations of these authors are rarely frivolous and vain, said the DiPreta. "There is something really attractive and powerful on putting something between two blankets and saying:"This is my version of events."." You can make reference to what the bible of the manner in which I lived my life. ? ?

With surprising results, some traders to join eventually in exchange for some often comic product placement in the film that gives companies especially good exhibition while Spurlock is also the point. He has even changed the title to add a product "POM Wonderful presents: the greatest film ever sold," in a blink of eye to the manufacturer of juices, POM.

"I am extremely convincing," Spurlock said, laughing about his idea. "But it took a lot of wooing bring them on board, there was a lot of contractual negotiations."

Such is his wooing prowess that, since the film made its debut at the Sundance Festival in January, Spurlock has added even more companies to sponsor its zoom on their own marketing practices. On Wednesday, he announced to eight other corporate sponsors, for a total of 22.

The idea of the movie first hit Spurlock when he and producer Jeremy Chilnick watched the TV show "heroes" and a character became very excited about a certain brand of car.

"I was like"wow,"this is really where we are now with television, such an advertisement in your flagrant face, in the show" he said. ""."Then we said, 'Let's make a film that focuses on product placement, fully paid by product placement." "

They called on hundreds of companies to participate, starting with advertising agencies, and strategists, who all refused to marketing. Then they began to communicate directly with the brand companies.

"Each brand that came in the film, we agreed to not denigrate the in any event, which was consistent, but in the end we could help dictate placement," he said.

The public sees Spurlock launchers in a comic fashion, promising to show himself band drink only POM juice, remain only in the Hyatt hotels, fly only JetBlue and so forth.

It examines the world of cinema, television and music, interviewing major directors of Hollywood as Peter Berg and Brett Ratner, ask their age-old questions of art versus commerce, which Ratner responds, "artistic integrity, what that is."

"The people who make big blockbuster Hollywood films have to play this game, because you have to do everything you can to make a movie that costs of $ 200 million," says Spurlock.

"You really want to much create as we speak in the film with"iron Man", the ubiquity of advertising".

Yet, as his hit "Super Size Me," which punishment McDonald's restaurants, the "most great film never sold" has a serious side.

Spurlock goes in American schools struggling for funding and research by businesses on the market for children.

"That will really take people back is the advertising medium begins to creep into the educational system," said Spurlock. "To make ends meet, they begin to sell advertising in schools... they are marketing for your children in a classroom.".

The Director made a trip to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where five years ago, they banned outdoor advertising, and he marvels the ban and the possibility to see the architecture.

"Perhaps eliminate advertising in all the cities in the world is not the answer, but it is an incredible way to see things differently," said. "If we removed it a little."

Ultimately, Spurlock is honest about his own brand of documentaries, using light and entertaining comedy to send a serious message.

"I would like to give you spinach, but I want that spinach to taste like cotton candy," he said.

Mattel suffers defeat in the battle of dolls Bratz (Reuters)

SANTA ANA, California (Reuters) - Mattel toy manufacturer suffered a defeat surprise Thursday after a jury decided U.S. MGA Entertainment owns legitimate dollar line once billion pouty lips of Bratz dolls.

The stunning loss for large manufacturer of toys the most is the latest development in a case which began in 2004, when the line of dolls MGA was fury among young girls. Mattel, Barbie the doll line rival officials, accused MGA stealing its designs by hiring away a key employee.

At the height of their popularity in 2005 and 2006, dolls urban-chic Bratz - sporting short skirts and tops flirty, confident in the stomach - eat in market share of Mattel and were considered a threat to the keys of Mattel Barbie franchise.

Mattel CEO Robert Eckert sitting pontificating as the verdict was read Thursday before a Federal Court in California. Later, he stated that he was disappointed.

"We remain committed to protect the intellectual property which is at the heart of the success of the business," Eckert said in an e-mail.

Mattel will soon file a request for a new trial, said Susan Estrich, a lawyer for the company.

CEO of the MGA Isaac Larian, said at the same time, that the case has been a long battle to his family. Larian, who left the Iran at the age of 17 years, two dolls Bratz named after his children.

"It shows very well that in America, even huge companies are not above the law", Larian said to Reuters.

A federal jury in 2008 ordered that MGA and Larian pay to Mattel $ 100 million, but a federal appellate court has launched this verdict last year.

MGA was then charged with Mattel admission to toy with false identification information fairs for stealing trade secrets and concealed evidence of these activities.

Jack Lerner, Professor at the USC Gould School of Law who has followed the case, said the new evidence allowed MGA to present a "large canvas" to the jury on the new trial, while the first trial was more circumscribed.

The jury found Mattel misappropriated trade secrets of MGA and awarded MGA 88.5 million in damages. The jury found that Mattel has acted voluntarily, and after counsel MGA verdict said that they will try to triple damages.

The jury also decided MGA has interfered with contract Mattel with designer Carter Bryant, but awarded only $10,000 in damages to Mattel.

Analyst of BMO Capital markets that Gerrick Johnson, said failure to settle will remain as an "extremely bad decision" by the Directorate of Mattel.

"This means that they wasted the 400 million or more money of the shareholder to obtain zero return", said Johnson.

U.S. District Judge David Carter said that the trade secret damage could be reduced to 88.4 million due to a calculation error by the Board.

The next hearing was set for May 24.

The Court of Appeal confirms TiVo patent infringed by flat (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - a Federal Court of Appeal upheld a ruling that EchoStar TiVo digital recording technology patent infringement, raising hopes that could end the legal battle for a long time with a victory for TiVo.

TiVo shares shot up after the judgment, exchange of more than 30 percent higher in early afternoon.

The dates back to 2004, when TiVo accused TV satellite Dish Network Provider EchoStar violate TiVo patents for software of the anachronism that allows users to save a television program while watching another legal battle.

"The decision appears to be biased to the TiVo," said analyst Maxim Group Mark Harding. "I am optimistic about the company receives an award of damages, but potentially a licensing agreement with dish."

DISH Network and EchoStar are now businesses.

Harding did not have an estimate for how much TiVo might get Dish Network, but added that a licensing agreement could take the form of a "a large cash payment upfront."

The next step is for the combat of patent should be sent to a lower court in Texas, where the judge has the power to stop flat digital recorders that infringe on the patents of TiVo.

"Facing imminent closure of millions of DVRS, we believe flat is faced with a regulation of the gun to the head," said Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett in a research note.

Moffett added that close and alternate DVRS could flat cost of $ 3 billion, by saying that this figure could liquidate a "reference" on a "potentially very expensive" regulation with TiVo.

Flat said in a statement that he was working as quickly as possible to upgrade customers who could possess boxes covered by the pursuit of new digital recorders that use different technologies.

Flat added in the statement he was "disappointed" by the decision and intends to request a review, as well as to request the suspension of the injunction.

But some analysts said the decisions of the Court were not entirely to the TiVo and cannot lead to an immediate end to the fight. The Court of appeal of the United States for the Federal Circuit has been asked a lower court to reconsider how it arrived at its decision that EchoStar was defiance of a permanent injunction related to the infringement of a patent for the software of the anachronism of TiVo.

This decision, TiVo has stated that it "intends to continue the fastest path to resolution."

The long battle legal wrong capacity TiVo take advantage of its software patents. California TiVo, pioneer of the digital TV recording software, but has posted quarter after quarter of losses that cable companies crammed into its market with cheaper registration boxes.

Administration plans Hollywood take on VOD studios (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Michael Bay and Kathryn Bigelow are among filmmakers leaders 23 denounce new video service at the request of bonus that puts some major studios films in homes only 60 days after their theatrical release.

They have signed an open letter supporting the candidacy of film theatre to scuttle the planned service by Warner Bros., Sony, Universal and 20th Century Fox.

Other signatories include Guillermo del Toro, Roland Emmerich, Shawn Levy, Michael Mann, Todd Phillips, Brett Ratner, Adam Shankman, Gore Verbinski and Robert Zemeckis. It is a formidable and powerful group with links strongly rooted in the studios, they now.

"As leaders in the community of creators, we call for a seat at the table." We want to hear the plans of the studios for how this new model of distribution will affect the future of the industry that we love, "States of the document."

"And until that happens, we ask that our studio partners do not unwisely undermine the system current, successful, releasing movies in a window of sequential distribution which encourages fans of cinema to see films on the scene of the optimal and most cost-effective exhibition",: theaters of America. ?

Cameron and his partner producer Jon Landau - also signatory - worked with the Assn.. National of the owners of the Theater (NATO) in raising support for the open letter. NATO will pay for the letter to appear in the publication of the industry variety Thursday - like DirecTV launches Home Premiere, the new VOD service. The first title is "Just go with Sony," which customers HD can rent for $29.99 from Thursday. Analysts have predicted that this will have little impact.

"You can discuss VOD windows throughout the day, but what you may not deny is that there is a huge outcry to theatre owners that they feel threatened by the present," said Cameron.

"The experience of cinema is the source of our entire company, regardless of what platforms we trickle down to." If exhibitors are concerned, I am concerned. We should be listening to them. Why on earth would you give audiences an incentive to ignore the optimal shape of your film? My films are not in the home at the beginning, but many will be, which will weaken the movie theater industry - and then my films are threatened, "Cameron continued."

The letter is the first public step in an ongoing effort by the owners of theatre to air the concerns of all those affected by the shortening of the theatrical release window.

"In the essential framework of a company that last year reported 32 billion dollars in sales of tickets for theatre in the world," the letter States, "we in the community of creators believe that the time is for both studios and cable to recognize that a release pattern for the" video on demand of premium that invades the theatrical window current could irrevocably harm the financial model of our film industry.

In their letter, directors and producers say premium VOD could negatively affect consumer purchasing habits, exacerbate film piracy and severely limit the ability of theatre owners to play movies in platform release profiles.

The studios are premium review VOD to offset a slowdown in DVD sales. Cameron and his brothers, said that the DVD problem is not solved by premium VOD. The letter says: "that sells for $30 by viewing today could be blown for $9.99 in the coming years.". Wiser heads prevail, the theatrical revenue cannibalization for a faulty, premature video window could lead to the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in annual revenue. Some theatres will close. ?

Intense attacks against the media in the agitation of the Middle East (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - journalists have been deleted in popular uprisings in the Middle East and the North Africa in attacks more than 500, some of them fatal, according to rights watchdog media.

Mohamed Abdel Dayem, program coordinator for the Committee to protect journalists in the Middle East and the North Africa, said the number of attacks on the media in the region since the beginning of the year was "unprecedented."

"This has has come before, not with this intensity and not with this frequency", he said.

Photojournalist Tim Hetherington, Co-Director of the documentary war named the Oscar "Restrepo", was killed in the besieged city Misrata on Wednesday, Libyan and other photographers injured.

Dayem said 14 journalists were killed in the world this year, with 10 of these deaths in the Middle East and North Africa. Hundreds of other assaults on the media in the region included detentions, destruction of material and death threats.

While the Committee on freedom of the press has improved since the evicted demonstrators the Presidents of the Egypt and the Tunisia, he described the situation as "horrendous bad graduate."

Social access to networking tools like Facebook and Twitter will help counteract the tight censorship in the region, say experts, but it is uncertain whether the unrest in the Bahrain, Syria, Yemen, the Libya and Saudi Arabia will lead to more democracy.

"It is not possible to stuff a sock in that mouth many," said Dayem. "There were once at a time where the number of mouths was limited and (Governments) could close all places all the time.". This model is not sustainable. ?

The Committee to protect journalists called on the authorities to the Yemen to explain why they have held prominent journalist Ali Salah Ahmed since Tuesday without revealing its location or of a crime.

CENSORSHIP LESS EFFECTIVE

Joe Stork, Director Assistant of the northern part of Human Rights Watch Africa division said that the recent uprisings have led to a "net gain" for the freedom of the media in the region.

"It is possible to disseminate information in places such as the Syria or Bahrain, in a manner that was not possible 10 years ago. "It's just the day and night comparison", said stork.

"On balance, certainly, there more free information but Exchange not because Governments are to--because they did not understand how to control."

Restrictions on the media will be much more difficult to maintain, because access to mobile phones and Internet, said Elliott Abrams, senior fellow for Middle Eastern Studies, Council on Foreign Relations.

"It is also because the revolts of Arab abolished censorship even more, just as they delegitimize election stealing and stealing public money," said Abrams.

"Many Governments continue to try to intimidate journalists physically or through phony prosecution... but it will be less effective."

But Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International Director for the Middle East and the North Africa, said that some protesters have been demanding more freedom for journalists, it was too early to say what progress could be made.

"We have seen the emergence of the blogger, the citizen journalist broken...,"he says. ".

Stork said while Egypt appears if moving in a positive sense, freedom of the press had been laid a coup when the military Council of the decision of the country demanded last month that Egyptian newspapers coverage had to be approved by the Direction of the Affairs of moral and military intelligence.

"Military clearly don't like criticism or critical discussion and they asked the media not to engage in the it and certainly that the main points of sale have respected", he said.

Dayem warned that if no there was no change of Government in some countries, it could result in more severe treatment of the media, referring to an unsuccessful uprising in Iran in 2009.

He said "Certainly did not leading to a more open media,". "In fact, it resulted in a more severe climate for the media in Iran and led almost directly in Iran being worst jailer of journalists in 2010 in the world."

First, General information on the case:

In 2004, the Vandals released their tenth album, "Hollywood potato chip", which was the name of the Group of letters on the cover quite similar to the trademark logo of variety.

Reed Elsevier, the parent company of variety, sent a cease and desist letter and has worked on a settlement with the band, who agreed to change the cover art. The agreement stipulated that the members of the band would have to pay $50,000 and more lawyers if the group never returned.

Last year, Reed sued the band for breach of contract, claiming that the offending image arose on the Web site for the Group and its label Kung Fu Records. The band argued that it was not behind the violations.

Defend the question for the Vandals was Escalante himself, an alum of Loyola Law School, who worked in the Affairs of the company to CBS before pursuing music. It also hosts a radio called "barely legal Radio," show which covers legal issues of entertainment. Escalante first task was to obtain the transferred cases from Delaware to the more convenient jurisdiction in Los Angeles. Variety objected to this attempt, claiming that the original agreement contained a clause designating Delaware as the forum to discuss disputes arising from the agreement.

Discovery Communications, in addition to the Discovery Channel, is the owner of TLC, Animal Planet, discovery of the inquiry, Science and made the discovery & health.

Cable network from Oprah Winfrey to travel overseas (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - three months after the Oprah Winfrey cable television chain created in the United States, preparations are underway to introduce the network to an international audience.

Frameworks of Discovery Communications Inc., a co-owner of the network, said initial discussions took place with distributors in foreign markets, adding that they expected talks to turn more serious later in the year.

"We are confident, there are markets, in that it will do well," Mark Hollinger, who directs business Discovery international, said at a presentation on Friday. "We are confident, that there will be an international launch of the channel."

Hollinger has refused to identify the countries in the expansion plan. Other United States, Oprah Winfrey network can currently be seen in the Canada.

"We said, 'Let's focus on the United States, for the time being;" We are going to tend to this a little later this year,'"Said Hollinger."

A joint venture between the edifying society discovery production and Oprah Winfrey, OWN launched the United States earlier this year as a network largely oriented towards the female with a combination of lifestyle, advice and entertainment. Ratings have been mixed so far.

But Winfrey, considered the most influential women on the American television should devote more energy to OWN in the coming months after the last original episode of its popular syndicated television show, "the oprah winfrey Show" is broadcast on 25 May.

International Discovery for OWN plans are part of its growing effort to build its business abroad. Chief Executive David Zaslav password up to 40% his time away from the United States, he said, visit markets such as the Chile, the Romania, the Russia and the India.

Its efforts are changing the financial equilibrium of the discovery. Five years ago only 10 per cent of its business came from overseas markets. Today, about one-third of its is.

Given the rapid growth of Subscriber in the development of markets, Zaslav said that it would not surprised if the company reaches a "tipping point" in several years that would make it larger than the Interior of international trade.

"These are markets which is feeling as the United States 10 years", he said, a period he described as a "Storm" for the company when the ratings, on cable advertising and Subscriber figures were booming.

An advantage for the discovery is that number of his adventures and science shows seems cut on measure for an international audience, since they usually avoid inside jokes or cultural references that make comedies or delicate export dramas.

The result is that a large part of the budget of Discovery - it spends currently 1 billion per year for content - can be used for the shows that play as well in the United States and abroad. By contrast, said Hollinger, other media companies operating abroad "have to produce all of their content at the local level or acquire it".

A discovery zone closer to more carefully is 3D. While it has launched a US TV network in 3D full time, he has no current to follow abroad, said plan frameworks.

"Right now, it is possible that in a large number of markets, a complete chain is not the way," said Hollinger, adding that 3D video on demand would be more likely.

Murdoch hacking history "Ain't", says UK judge (Reuters)

London (Reuters) - public apology of arm of Rupert Murdoch UK journal designed to contain a phone climbing piracy scandal looks not having after a judge declared civil cases against the company could reach at least next year.

A Conference case management called to decide how best to manage a potential flood of legal proceedings, the judge said Friday that it would hear four or five test cases, potentially, including actress Sienna Miller, towards the end of the year.

So far, about 20 public figures who believe that their voice messages were intercepted by the popular news of the world tabloid journalists continue News International, the arm of UK of News Corp newspaper.

But many others is supposed to occur after the Group has apologized to the eight victims last week and said that he would set up a compensation scheme.

Potential applicants will have to weigh to accept compensation to offshore or go to court and risk in large projects of legal act, and potentially embarrassing information being made public or not.

Week last deputy chief operating officer of News Corp. James Murdoch, the son of company Patriarch, said the company had managed to "put this problem in a box" but judge Geoffrey your clearly that this was not the case.

"The show Ain" t over. It is quite clear, "said your a courtroom in London, packed with teams of lawyers and journalists."

An investigation into the practices of news to news gathering world received so far from celebrities, Ministers of the Government, the stars of the sport and British Prime Minister David Cameron, on several occasions making headlines in rival publications.

Counsel for Sienna Miller said before the Court that his former partner, the actor Jude Law can also start proceedings against the paper.

The scandal has also clouded a deal provided by the parent company, News Corp for a buyback of 14 billion of British pay-TV Group BSkyB, with critics saying that the Government should put on hold until the investigation of piracy is completed.

Your tent as test cases proposed those brought by Miller, sports agent Skylet Andrew, ex-sports pundit Andy Gray and interior designer Kelly Hoppen because they cover a wide range of issues and have been closer to be ready for trial.

"It is difficult to imagine that there would be generic issues which would not raised by the case," said your. They might be ready for trial at the end of the year or next year at the beginning, he said.

Police is also carry out a criminal investigation. They arrested three new superiors of the journalists of the world so far this year, including a Thursday.

But there is a week, the company acknowledged that some of these stories can come from private hacking telephone messages and he accepted responsibility for the first time. News International apologized for eight people, including the politician Miller and British Tessa Jowell, who continued the company.

JOURNALISTS ORDERS

A senior media counsel, who asked not to be named told Reuters that the case would continue to play a role on the press that the criminal investigation and civil on rage.

"International news hope neutralize it by adjusting the people", he said. "But as long as there is sufficient providers that were not purchased, then it will continue and litigation is a slow process."

"It is personal and on the principle".

George Galloway, a politician left who believes he was targeted, expressed concern that the company would force people to accept compensation rather than run the risk of large legal bills.

"I am concerned by what happens in the background, which is that they try to prevent the truth to come out by everyone offering lots of money", he said.

For years, News International maintained that phone hacking at the tabloid was limited to a handful of individuals ROE, a position seen as an attempt to protect the reputation of those at the top.

Its royal editor and a private investigator were imprisoned in 2007 for hacking voicemail messages on aid to the Royal family of Britain. Editor Andy Coulson resigned, saying that he took ultimate responsibility but that he did not know about the practice.

Coulson later became the spokesman for the Prime Minister, but resigned this position in January as a new police investigation gathered steam.

The case has also clouded the deal from BSkyB, which criticizes the fear would increase the influence of News Corp on the British media. The Government should approve in the coming weeks.

Broadcasters of the Gulf are the red line in uprisings (Reuters)

Dubai (Reuters) - broadcasters Pan-Arab who played a key Arab reports uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt role help dynastic leaders the doors of the Gulf to stop the revolts spread on their patch of police, say analysts.

Qatar Al Jazeera-based main Arabic-language network, was crucial in maintaining momentum in the protests that toppled the Zine al-Abdine Ben Ali and Hosni Mubarak, anchored both leaders were not friends of the Qatar decision of Al Thani dynasty.

When the cameras Al Jazeera became the Yemen, it was as if his guns were trained on the next target in a long-standing uprising, Arab leaders have been convinced was manufacturing chain.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose poor country of 23 million is not a member of the Arab Gulf easy club, accused Al Jazeera of running a "room of the operations of burn the Arab nation." His Government revoked the licences of the Al Jazeera correspondents on its cover to the Yemen.

For viewers to watch the demonstrations spread throughout the region, the excitement suddenly stopped at Bahrain. Thin cover has been given to protests in the Gulf Cooperation Council member and the repression that followed by his Sunni leaders who called in Saudi Arabia and Emirati troops in March under a regional Defense Pact.

Events in Oman and Saudi Arabia also received little attention in recent months.

"Bahrain does not exist as Al Jazeera is concerned, and they avoided inviting Bahraini or Omani or Saudi criticism of those regimes," stated As'ad Abu Khalil, Professor of politics at the University of California.

"More glaring, Al Jazeera is not a view that is critical of repression Bahrain to appear in the air." "The GCC has closed ranks and Qatar can be rewarded with the coveted post of the Secretary General of the Arab League."

Despite a wealth of material, there is no agitation montages featuring comments by demonstrators or scenes of violence against the activists at Bahrain. Al Jazeera has produced these segments to accompany Egyptian and Tunisian coverage.

The threat posed by the Bahrain demonstrations was closer to home. Have their success would set a precedent for wider public participation in a region governed by the Sunni dynasties. More alarming for these dynasties, he would have given more power to majority of the Bahrain Shia, that is suspicious by Sunni leaders who fear the influence of the regional power Iran Shi'ite.

From the beginning, Al Jazeera framed the movements in Tunisia, Egypt, and then Yemen as "revolutions" and the Government subverts the prohibitions on its cover by viewers inviting to send images captured on mobile phones to a particular address.

"Despite being banned in Egypt, Al Jazeera went to great efforts to provide live coverage of events nonstop.". "He does step to the Bahrain,", said political analyst Ghanem Nuseibeh.

"Unless it can address concerns about its coverage of Bahrain, Al Jazeera will suffer damages reputation."

Al Jazeera has recognized "hard land" at Bahrain.

"It was a particularly heavy news agenda over the past months, with the uprisings taking place simultaneously in several countries in the Arab region," said a spokesman.

"The editorial priorities are weighed on a number of factors at any time." All news organizations have made to these pressures, but despite this and the difficult terrain to Bahrain, we've covered events in the country much. ?

DIPLOMATIC TOOL

Al Jazeera has won praise for revolutionizing the Arab media since 1996, but observers have seen coverage fluctuate on certain questions according to the whims of the leaders of the State of the Qatar.

Well oil and gas power, Qatar employs vast resources of Al Jazeera, including the sister English back channel has not shown the same reserve when it comes to the Gulf States.

A diplomatic cable U.S. WikiLeaks, released in December said diplomats U.S. sees Al Jazeera, belonging to the State of the Qatar Media Corporation, as a bargaining tool in its foreign policy.

Qatar launched a foreign political campaign on the Libya. He recognized the rebels as a legitimate authority of the Libya and joined the air strikes from the West on the Muammar al-Gaddafi force - Arab leader veteran has long been on bad terms with his peers in the Gulf.

Al Jazeera has followed with heavy coverage of the Libya.

During this time, the attention on the events in Syria - including the anti-Israel position had assured years Bashar al-Assad positive coverage - has been slow to pick up. He missed the discussed in detail the most favored Arab uprisings.

Through months of unrest, the Saudis Al Arabiya was conservative, reflecting the shock in Riyadh at the fate of the long time allies who, according to her, that Washington should have defended.

Saudi Arabia has given refuge to Ben Ali after he fled on January 14. On the Egypt, whose leader left on February 11, Al Arabiya long avoided the word "revolution" for "change."

Talk show presenter Hafez al-Mirazi "Studio Cairo" was dismissed in February after he said on air that it will host a discussion on political reform in the Gulf in his next show.

"I said no there was no excuse for anyone to Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya to discuss the Egypt all by being only unable to speak of the Emir of the Qatar or Qatari political or policy of King Abdullah and Saudi"."," Mirazi said after the night show was abandoned.

But in Libya, Al Arabiya seems finally find an Arab revolution, he loved to throw into coverage with enthusiasm. He was also gung - ho in covering the Syria, which, as the Libya, has been on bad terms with Riyadh.

ARABS OF THE GULF "DIFFERENT."

Analysts say only Saudi Arabia convinced its neighbors that any concession by the leaders of the Bahrain would have implications for all States of the Gulf, including the Qatar, even if it has a population of tiny only 260 000 nationals among a total of 1.7 million of.

"It was fantastic pressure from Saudi Arabia, the Qatar to join (the military operation in the Gulf) at Bahrain and at least to curb Al Jazeera," said a London-based analyst who did not want to be named because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia - rivals for leadership roles in the Gulf - end years of frosty in 2007 links. The result was the end of any serious discussion of the Saudi policy on Al Jazeera.

The channel and its main competitor, the Saudis Al Arabiya, operate in a market of news which includes Hezbollah's Al Manar, Arab, BBC, France 24, Iran Al Alam and Egyptian channels, catering to some 300 million Arabic speakers.

"Al Jazeera is not very different to Al Arabiya when it comes to Bahrain - the two are tongue-tied by Saudi military intervention, said Ayman Ali, a commentator in the press in the Gulf."
