Al Jazeera wins top journalism award New York (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - news on the Qatar channel Al Jazeera English service will be awarded the highest honour of Columbia School of Journalism of New York for its coverage of unrest in the Middle East, the University said Wednesday.

Columbia Journalism Award honors "unique journalism in the public interest." The school of journalism at Columbia is also the Commission of the Pulitzer Prize, which honours each year of journalism, books, theatre and poetry.

"Al Jazeera English has played a great service by providing the English-speaking world coverage of unrest in the Middle East,", said the Columbia School of Journalism Dean Nicholas Lemann.

"We applaud his determination to get to the heart of a complicated story unfolding in countries where the news was always difficult to cover," he said in a news release.

Al Jazeera, not worn most cable and satellite television markets us, has the reputation of being anti-American and has also come under fire from Arab countries since its inception in 1996.

But Al Jazeera English has won today wide praise for its place of statement and background on protests throughout the Middle East.

Egypt ordered Al-Jazeera to close its operations and Al Jazeera had its signal cut. Its correspondents were prevented from several Arab States and it has fascinated Arab viewers, who previously had very little choice but the State TV.

The full 24 hours of Al Jazeera English channel is only available in three markets TV in the United States, the largest being in Washington by Comcast, Verizon yarn and Cox, a possible audience of 2.4 million, told Al Jazeera.
