The largest number reflects a push by the producers of "american idol" to attract candidates to the younger, and make slide the introduction of new judges Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler to stem a rating of four years.
McCreery, 17 and finalist Lauren Alaina, 16, made for the youngest ever finals match-up in the 10-year history of the show.
