NEW YORK (Reuters) - Group of Warner Bros. home entertainment said Wednesday that it has agreed to buy Flixster, a private company movie of discovery request.
Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., is in the hope of helping consumers to organize and to discover their top movies with applications on their computers, phones and other devices.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
"We plan to extend the functionality to allow the consumer to organize and to have access to their collections of digital film on any device they like and also buy and rent films", Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes said on a conference call with analysts.
The acquisition of Flixster includes Rotten Tomatoes, a site popular film news and control. Flixster will continue to operate independently from its offices in San Francisco while Rotten Tomatoes continues to work in Los Angeles.
In particular, Warner Bros. seeks to use the Flixster brand to help drive its digital strategy, including its "digital everywhere" initiative, similar to the initiative of its company mother "TV everywhere". Idea consumers will use the application to organize and access all their films on any device of their choice.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Kevin Tsujihara President, said the growth at the wheel of fans with digital versions of favorite films is a strategic priority for the company.
As other studios, Warner Bros., is to see DVD shrink sales every year as moviegoers began to seek their top movies on digital services like Netflix and iTunes.
DVD sales fell 20 percent in the first quarter of 2011, according to a report by Digital Entertainment Group of this week.
