NEW YORK (Reuters)-& Barnes Noble Inc. has unveiled a new e-reader Tuesday that the characteristics of a touch screen, weighs less than a paperback book and has a battery life of two months - features designed to compete with Amazon.com Inc. and Apple Inc..
Introduction of Barnes & Noble of a new corner comes only days after John Malone Liberty Media Corp. offered to buy the chain of bookstores for $ 1 billion. Liberty Media, which pursues a strategy of recent years to align the active cheap related to media, is supposed to be Prosecutor public offer to purchase because of his desire to acquire the franchise of the corner.
Noble & Barnes, which introduced its first e-reader in 2009, has tried to remake in a vendor of digital books to deal with readers from printed books.
The last corner will sell for $139, which is the same price as Amazon, the Kindle e-reader and will begin shipping on June 10. The touch screen device weighs 7.5 ounces, has a 6 inch display and allows a user to search for words, highlight passages, and adjust the size of the police.
The corner of new lands in a highly competitive market, where Apple, with its iPad, Amazon fight with Barnes & Noble for customers who want to read books and magazines on small portable devices.
Barnes & Noble has deployed the new corner less than a month after he made improvements to its $249 color e-reader, that plays videos and features of games such as "Angry birds."
While black and white, corner presented Tuesday is more than $100 cheaper that its color counterpart, an analyst said prices would probably fall holiday season.
"Even if this corner is technically more difficult to do, it appears smaller and cheaper and the average consumer will want to pay less for it,"said research analyst Forrester James McQuivey.""
He added that the new corner should put some distance between it and Amazon, which has no characteristics of color or a touch screen in its e-reader. Amazon may be under pressure to come out with a new version of its Kindle, he said.
"Amazon will be forced to follow Barnes & Noble, first with the color, and then with a touch screen," McQuivey said.
The cheapest version of the Kindle, which sells for $114, is slightly less expensive than the corner. But this Kindle has ads, while the corner does not.
Barnes & Noble claironné simplicity of the new corner frames, stating that the designers it streamlined, reduce the number of buttons and fitted with a screen "paper-like". It can contain up to 1,000 digital books.
